Marcus Valerius Martialis was born in Bilbilis, Spain, in 40 AD. He came to Rome in 64 AD and quickly established himself as a poet. He was a friend of many of the leading literary figures of his day, including Pliny the Younger and Juvenal. Martial's epigrams were hugely popular in his own lifetime and have remained so ever since. He is considered one of the greatest Latin poets and his work is still studied and enjoyed today.
Martial's epigrams are typically short, witty poems that often satirize the foibles and vices of Roman society. He wrote about everything from bad poets to corrupt politicians to stingy friends. Martial's epigrams are often very funny, but they can also be quite biting. He was not afraid to speak his mind, and his epigrams often got him into trouble with the authorities.
Despite his troubles with the authorities, Martial continued to write epigrams until his death in 104 AD. He left behind a body of work that is still enjoyed today. Martial's epigrams are a valuable source of information about Roman society and they are also a testament to his wit and satirical genius.
