Early Life and Career

Anthony "Tony" Ryan was born on January 24, 1945, in Melbourne, Australia. He developed a love of cars and racing at a young age, and he began his racing career in the mid-1960s. Ryan quickly established himself as a talented driver, and he won the Australian Formula 5000 Championship in 1970 and 1971.

Ryan's success in Formula 5000 led to him being offered a drive in the European Formula 2 Championship in 1972. He finished third in the championship in his first season, and he went on to win the championship in 1973. Ryan's success in Europe led to him being offered a drive in the Formula One World Championship in 1974.

Ryan made his Formula One debut at the 1974 Spanish Grand Prix, and he finished eighth in his first race. He won the championship in his first season, and he went on to win the championship again in 1984 and 1985. Ryan's success in the British Touring Car Championship made him one of the most successful touring car drivers in the world.

International Racing

In addition to his success in Australia and the United Kingdom, Ryan also raced in a number of other countries, including the United States and France. He won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1985, and he finished second in the race in 1987. Ryan also raced in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series in the United States, and he finished second in the Daytona 500 in 1987.

Ryan's international racing career was marked by his aggressive driving style and his ability to win races in different types of cars. He was one of the few drivers to have won major races in Formula One, touring cars, and sports cars.

Later Life and Legacy

Ryan retired from racing in 1992, and he went on to become a successful businessman. He owned a number of businesses, including a car dealership and a racing team. Ryan was also a passionate supporter of motorsport, and he was inducted into the Australian Motorsport Hall of Fame in 1999.

Tony Ryan died on March 16, 2007, at the age of 62. He is remembered as one of the greatest Australian racing car drivers of all time.
